Choosing the right bat is important. Several things to consider are weight, length and type of bat. Once you select the right bat for you, you will also need to know how to break it in.

Baseball Bat

Bat speed is probably the biggest factor that should sway your decision in purchasing a baseball or softball bat. A heavier bat will give the ball more momentum, but the heavier the bat usually means a slower bat speed. With a lighter bat you are much more likely to make contact because you will have a higher bat speed. You will find that most players with high batting averages use lighter bats.

Swing as many different bats as you can. If your team doesn’t have a wide variety of bats to try, try a sporting goods store. Try not to select a long bat that will allow you to hit pitches that may end up going into the opposite batter’s box. Consider where you stand in the batter’s box to make sure that you can extend through the whole strike zone. If a pitch is outside of the strike zone, don’t swing at it.

Aluminum bat VS. Wood baseball bat? Aluminum bats are more durable and less flexible which makes the ball jump off the bat. Wooden bats have a classic and more flexible feel and are usually a little safer for the pitcher, less of a worry about those comeback here line drives.

Head to a batting cage to see how comfortable you feel when trying to make contact. Don’t be afraid to have a friend or family member video record a number of swings so you can examine your swing to make sure that the bat allows you to reach through the whole strike zone. Once you feel comfortable in the batting cage, you’ll know that you’ve found the right bat for you.

Now that you have selected the right bat for you, it is time to break it in. Aluminum bats don’t really need any breaking in. Instead, there are things to do to break yourself into your new bat and make sure you didn’t purchase a dead bat. Hit about 20 to 30 balls off a tee, rotating the bat a little bit each time making sure that the entire barrel of the bat gets touched. Then during a game switch between your trusty stand by and your new bat to make sure your new bat is performing properly.

To break in a composite bat you should hit 200 to 500 actual bats during infield practice or use a tee if necessary. Continuously turn the bat slightly after every time you make good contact until the entire barrel of the bat gets good contact. Avoid hitting the bat against a tree, or putting in vise grips, for these practices will void the warranty.

baseball bat

Wood bats don’t really need to be broken in either. A few rules that you should follow to help extend the life of your wooden bat are storing your bat in the house and avoiding extreme temperatures such as the inside of a car or in your garage. Also, there are 2 spots on a wood bat with the greatest possibility of failure, the logo and the area opposite of the logo. Do not hit the ball in these 2 areas. If you do, you are almost guaranteed to break the bat.

Bats these days are expensive. If you take care and break them in properly, the bat will last you a long time. In the long run, this will save you money and more importantly you will become a more consistent and feared hitter.

PostHeaderIcon Baseball & Softball Coaches Equipment

If you don’t have an easy to read line-up posted in the dugout you are hurting yourself, your players, and subsequently your team by allowing yourself and the team to be distracted from the game. Let’s face it, it’s information that you want to have ready access to, and you want your players to have ready access to as well. So why are you keeping this vital information on a scratch piece of paper or on a carbon copy that is barely legible?

baseball $ softball coaches equipment

The best magnetic lineup board is about 8.5″ x 14″ and consists of a position diagram of the softball field on the top, positions for a batting order on the bottom, and a hook so it can be easily hung in the dugout for everyone to see. You simply place magnets with the player’s names in the position on the diagram that they will be playing. If you will be subbing in to a position you can go ahead and put the sub’s magnetic above or below the starter’s magnet. The same is true with the batting order. If you know you will be subbing in for a hitter just put the sub’s magnet next to the starter’s magnet.

The real beauty to a magnetic lineup board is before the game has started when you are putting together your game strategy. After making your initial batting order it’s very easy to adjust for who’s hot and who’s not, or if you need a bunter in the second or third position, and if you change the batting order will that change who you want to play on defense and where you can make those changes. You can also see the effect your substitutions will have on positions and the batting order. What you used to have to envision in your mind you can now see on the board, both offensively and defensively and for the entirety of the game not just the start of the game. It let’s you create your game strategy prior to the game. It’s called HAVING A PLAN.

Hey Coach, Listen Up

The decisions you make in determining your lineup WILL AFFECT the outcome of the game. Once the game has started there’s not much opportunity to correct a poor batting order. Sometimes it’s easy to put together a line up. Other times, we’ve spent 10 or 15 minutes maneuvering players around on our magnetic lineup board to assess the strengths and weaknesses and determining what we needed for the upcoming game. I can’t imagine going through this exercise with paper and pen.

Whether your fastpitch softball team, or baseball team, is a beginning team or a highly skilled tournament team, putting your players in the right positions, building the best batting order, and having a plan for your substitutions, will decide the outcome of many fastpitch softball games. A magnetic lineup board costs about $20.00. Twenty dollars is a cheap investment to KNOW that you have given your team their best opportunity to win. Hey, it’s worth the twenty bucks just not to have to answer the question “who do I bat after” 500 times during the season.

There are two magnetic lineup boards on the market. The Easton brand and the Coacher brand. They both cost about $20.00, HOWEVER, the Coacher board is the clear winner. The Easton board does not have a field diagram which prevents you from visualizing the starting defense and, just as important, the defense after substitutions have been made. The Coacher board does have the field diagram.

In conclusion, I would grade the Easton board a C because it is better than using a piece of paper. The Coacher board gets an A+ as it is the complete package and the superior product. For the same investment, you have the choice of the Mercedes or the Pinto.

Is Demarini the best Baseball Bat on the market? The 2009 line up of baseball bats may well be the best bats Demarini has ever made! Established in 1989 Demarini Bats, a sub-division of Wilson, is making a strong case to take over the baseball bat market. All of the Demarini bats have flexed tuned carbon composite handles which are lighter than alloys and will flex 2 to 4 times more providing more power at contact. Demarini makes 3 collegiate and high school approved bats, each having a different patented end cap. New for 2009 Demarini is touting their new “Pitch Black” composite technology claiming it is stronger than competing technologies.

Here is the line-up for 2009

The 2009 CF3 comes in collegiate or high school sizes as follows:

PostHeaderIcon Baseball Bats Are Made

A baseball bat is a smooth rod made of wood or metal. High-quality wooden, metal, and composite type bats are available. Most wooden bats are made from maple, ash, hickory, and bamboo. Titanium and aluminum are the prime metals used in metal baseball bats.

How Are Baseball Bats Made?

Bats are available in a variety of models, sizes, and options. The ?barrel,? also called ?sweet spot,? is the thick part of the bat where it is meant to hit the ball. The end part of barrel is called ?tip.? The barrel narrows down and becomes the ?handle.? The next region is the ?knob,? which lies close to the handle. The total length of a bat is limited to 42 inches, and the thickest part has a diameter of 2.7 inches (70 mm). A standard bat has a weight of around 39 ounces (1.1 kg).

Generally, two methods are used for bat crafting, namely single-piece and two-piece construction. In single-piece construction, no assembly is required and the bat is crafted as a whole. The design strategies followed during the construction stage will influence its overall strength and performance.

The first step is the selection of an appropriate wood (in the case of wooden bats). Durable type woods are power-bonded into billets and then turned and sanded. High-tech wood kilns are used to remove the moisture content from wood. Patented reinforcement is then applied to the handle, and the bat is completed with a two-coat lacquer finish. Finally, the bat is dyed in one of the seven standard colors. The main colors used are natural white, red stain, black, two-tone blue and white stain.

The bat’s unique design allows hitting the ball from any side of the barrel. In some bats, handle parts are made of metal alloy or filter composite material, and the hitting part is made of wood. The barrels may be single-piece construction or made of two or more pieces. Laminated wooden bats can be designed by combining wood material, fiberglass, and carbon-reinforced handles and barrels. In aluminum bat construction, alloy-strengthening additives are used, which gives better performance and durability than wooden bats.

wood baseball bat

In two-piece construction, the handle and barrel are two separate parts and joined by any material, usually rubber. Baseball bats for Little League, senior league, and college levels are crafted after considering certain parameters, depending on particular requirements.

Youth baseball equipment bags are useful in helping to keep equipment organized. There is a lot of equipment associated with baseball. Getting it to the field can be difficult without the baseball equipment bags of the right size. When choosing them, the customer should consider several things. First, he or she should think about the type of things that needs to be carried. If the buyer is a team coach, he or she may need to keep track of lots of team equipment. In these cases, it is best to choose the bags properly sized for what is being carried.

Another consideration when choosing equipment bags is the ease with which one can transport the bags. New ones are designed with wheels to allow for easy transport of even the heaviest of equipment. This allows people to put more into the bag. In addition, buyers should opt for bags that have detachable carry handles and shoulder straps that allow them to choose the way they handle the bag.

Some youth baseball equipment bags are made to carry specific kinds of baseball gear. For example, people can find helmet or bat bags to carry these. These may come with specially sized compartments to properly organize and protect the gear.

It is best to pick bags made of strong durable materials. High quality bags will hold up to all types of punishment and weather conditions. Those that are made with man made materials will repel water more easily, and are also easier to clean.

PostHeaderIcon Evolution of Baseball Equipment

The game of American Baseball has evolved from the British game of cricket, often called “rounders,” which was a favorite pastime during the 18th century Colonial Era. The development of baseball is attributed to Alexander Joy Cartwright who founded the modern baseball field in 1845 and laid out the rules of the game. Once a leisure activity for wealthy white males, baseball became in ever present game in various cities after the Civil War. Soldiers had brought back the game of baseball into their towns where other American citizens would watch and participate.

Evolution of baseball equipment

The appeal of baseball led to the institutionalization of the game by the National Association. At this point, teams developed and became rivals with the Cincinnati Red Stockings being the first professional team in 1869. The first World Series took place in 1903 with the two rival leagues, the National and the American playing each other. It wasn’t until 1947 that Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play baseball, joined the Brooklyn Dodgers and allowed other African Americans to play. This evolution of baseball is inseparable from the evolution of baseball equipment.

The Ball: The first baseball was sized between a golf ball and softball and was made of horsehide with a rubber core. In 1872, ball standards changed and the Dead Era was no longer prevalent. The National League granted rights to the Spalding Sporting Goods Company to supply a new, larger ball that weighed about 5 ounces. With this ball, however, came few home runs and low scores until the Reach Sporting Goods company invented the new cork center ball that was much livelier. Offense increased and new pitching techniques emerged including the spit ball and scuff ball along with Babe Ruth as an all star. Ever since 1974, cowhide replaced horsehide for the cover due to financial reasons.

The Bat: Baseball bats originally came in various shapes and sizes and batters even made their own bats. After experimentation, baseball players realized that bats with rounded barrels were the best. In 1859, baseball bats became more standardized with bats at 2.5 inches in diameter but at any length. 10 years later, bats were required to be 42 inches long at the most, which is the maximum length today. The Louisville Slugger was born in 1884 which was made of wood and wooden bats continue to be used today but weigh less and have thinner handles. The first metal bat emerged in 1924 and was officially used in a game in 1970.

Catcher’s Glove: Catchers’ gloves started off as leather work gloves without full fingers and later on evolved into more padded gloves to avoid injuries. It is believed that the catcher was the first person to wear a glove as they had to catch pitches. The National League and American Association of Base Ball Clubs issues a rule saying that the Catcher and First Baseman must wear gloves of any size and weight and other players could not wear gloves over ten ounces and fourteen inches in circumference.

The changes that have taken place in the evolution of baseball equipment have been partly responsible for the refinement of the actual game of baseball. Over the course of its history, baseball has remained an important American sport and has been part of popular culture.

PostHeaderIcon Baseball Equipment Reviews

Are you tired of the ping, ping, ping of aluminum bats? Many people have complained about the high pitched sound before. Well, there is good news for you because the 2008 baseball bats are made of a carbon reinforced composite material. So, instead of the ping of aluminum you hear more of a crack of thud when the ball hits the composite bats. It sounds more like a traditional wood bat. Now you can get the distance of a metal bat without the annoying sound.

baseball eqipment review

As a baseball equipment retailer and, quite frankly a person who loves the game, we often get asked to pick the best bat. Rather than play favorites, the following is a review of two of what will be the best selling bats in the 2008 equipment line up.

New for 2008 the Demarini CF3 is making waves all over the college baseball world. The CF3 is Demarini first attempt at a composite baseball bat and they past the test with flying colors. The Demarini CF3 is the first double wall composite bat that has 2 walls acting independently of each other for maximum trampoline effect. This combined with the new clutch end cap give this bat the biggest sweet spot in the game and allows for maximum performance on off center hits.

The Easton Stealth Composite is new for 2008 and is Easton’s second attempt at a composite baseball bat. The new Easton Stealth Composite comes two different ways the regular flex (BCN7) and the stiff flex (BCN8). The difference between the 2 is the amount of flex in the opti-flex composite handle. The regular flex has 3 times more flex than aluminum handles and the stiff flex has 1.5 times more flex than aluminum handles.

PostHeaderIcon A Guide to College Baseball Bats

In the mid 1850s, when baseball was in its infancy, players made their own bats. They experimented with flat bats, round bats, and heavy bats. They ultimately discovered that the barrel shaped bat was the most effective. Today, college baseball bats have taken this technology to a new, powerful level upon the introduction of aluminum bats in the mid 1970s. Too many wooden bats were being broken, so due to budget crunches suffered by many college athletic programs, collegiate baseball made the switch from wood to aluminum bats. This sparked a debate that rages today.

A Guide to College Baseball Bats

Many purists want to do away with the high tech aluminum/alloy bats and return to the days where they claim hitters had to be much better in order to rack up those high batting averages. On the other hand, a many people believe that the aluminum college baseball bats elevate the game to an exciting level, with more home runs and a faster pace. Colleges still prefer the aluminum bats due to their durability, their cost effectiveness, and their lightweight swinging power.

College players can pay as little as $50 for a used bat or up to several hundreds of dollars for ultra-light, specialized alloy bats. College players usually have a good feel for what kind of bat they need. They should consider personal height in relation to the length of the bat, and of course barrel size and weight. One advantage of current college baseball bats is that the batter can capitalize on the inside edge of the strike zone. So when a pitcher is trying to jam the batter, a base hit can be ripped out with a good aluminum bat.

College baseball bats are available online, in sporting goods stores, and at used equipment outlets. Always ask the coach for guidance, and test bats for free at a batting cage so that you may more effectively judge the bat’s power and fit before making your selection.
